AI Companies Caught In State And Federal Battle Over Regulations
AI regulation is a hot topic at all levels of government, but no consensus on the best path forward exists, putting businesses at risk when they back one approach.
Anthropic was the only major AI company to endorse the bill formally. However, since Newsom signed the measure into law, other industry players have voiced more support for the regulations. In a LinkedIn post, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, wrote that the company was “pleased” with how the bill turned out. Previously, the company had been a part of the amendment process before it was passed, according to Politico.
Anthropic has attracted negative attention from members of the White House, particularly AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks. Sacks went after the business following a speech from Anthropic co-founder and head of policy, Jack Clark, outlining what he sees as the importance of transparency for the future of the AI industry and to ensure appropriate regulation. Sacks argued that the remarks show that Anthropic “is running a sophisticated regulatory capture strategy based on fear-mongering” and that the business “is principally responsible for the state regulatory frenzy that is damaging the startup ecosystem.” Both before and during his time in government, Sacks has been a vocal proponent of lighter-touch regulation for AI and has led the White House to support rules that foster innovation.
